HEAT members have conducted ground-breaking research into the effects of adopting a healthy lifestyle in healthy and diseased populations with our collective research work published more than 200 in high quality scientific journals. Our work has been utilised amongst others by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the British Heart Foundation (BHF), the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) and the Evidence-based NHS in both the UK and Scotland.

SPORT AS MEDICINE

There is strong evidence that exercise and sport  can be used as medicine since it can improve many different physiological mechanisms in the human body that can prevent or treat symptoms of chronic disease.

Based on our good quality research, we promote the adoption of a physically active lifestyle which is tailored to individual needs and preferences as well as helping the individual – using a compassionate care approach – to change behaviour and be more physically active. We have developed and utilised cost-effective interventions that have helped individuals with chronic disease to adopt healthy lifestyles and improve symptoms of their disease.

Our approach is in line with high-profile Organisations such as the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).
